Round Midnight - Thelonious Monk ----------------------------------------------- arranged by Howard Wright I worked out these chords by listening to two versions of the song I've got - one with Monk playing solo at the piano, and another with him and drums, bass, horns etc. The two versions aren't exactly the same - but I've tried to find the common ground between them to get a 'basic' arrangement. You can play around with the chords, jazzing them up a bit, but the ones I'll give at the start are the 'basics'. Within the versions I've got, there's a lot of variation in the chords. Especially Monk's playing at the piano - he seems to love adding flat 5ths to every other chord !!! In fact, if you want to increase the 'Monk factor', instead of playing straight 7ths, play 7-5 chords instead. E.g in the intro chords instead of : Am7-5 D7 Gm7-5 C7 etc You could play : Am7-5 D7-5 Gm7-5 C7-5 Intro : --------Am7-5 Am7-5 Piano Chord D7 D7 Piano Chord Gm7-5 Gm7-5 Piano Chord C7 C7 Piano Chord E---------8------8-------------------------6------6------------ B---4-6-8----8-6----8-6-7------------2-4-6----6-4---6-4-5------ G-------------------------------------------------------------- D-------------------------------------------------------------- A-------------------------------------------------------------- E--------------------------------------------------------------Fm7-5 Fm7-5 Piano Chord Bb7 Bb7 Piano Chord E--------4------4------------------------------------------------ B--0-2-4----4-2----4-2-3----------------------------------------------- G-------------------------------------------------------------- D-------------------------------------------------------------- A-------------------------------------------------------------- E-------------------------------------------------------------- Verse 1 : ----------Ebm Ebm Piano Chord Ebm/D Ebm/Db Cm6 Cm6 Piano Chord Abm7 Abm7 Piano Chord Db7 Db7 Piano Chord Ebm6 Ebm6 Piano Chord Bm7 Bm7 Piano Chord E7 E7 Piano Chord Bbm7 Bbm7 Piano Chord Eb7 Eb7 Piano Chord E----------6-----------------6--------------6--9--8------------------------ B--------6---7--------------------9-------7----------------10---9---9----8- G------8---------------8----------------8---------------8------------------ D----8--------------8-------------------------------------------------- A------------------------------------------------------------------- E-----------------------------------------------------------------Abm7 Abm7 Piano Chord Db9 Db9 Piano Chord Ebm* Ebm* Piano Chord Ab7-5 Ab7-5 Piano Chord Cm7-5 Cm7-5 Piano Chord F7 F7 Piano Chord Bb7-5 Bb7-5 Piano Chord E--------11---14---13--------------------------------------------- B-----12---------------14---11------------------------------------ G--13--------------------------------------11---10----8h9--------- D-------------------------------------------------------------- A-------------------------------------------------------------- E-------------------------------------------------------------- Verse 2 : ---------- Almost exactly the same - but play Gbmaj7 in the 3rd line instead of Ebm*Ebm Ebm Piano Chord Ebm/D Ebm/Db Cm6 Cm6 Piano Chord Abm7 Abm7 Piano Chord Db7 Db7 Piano Chord Ebm6 Ebm6 Piano Chord Bm7 Bm7 Piano Chord E7 E7 Piano Chord Bbm7 Bbm7 Piano Chord Eb7 Eb7 Piano Chord Abm7 Abm7 Piano Chord Db9 Db9 Piano Chord Gbmaj7 Gbmaj7 Piano Chord Ab7-5 Ab7-5 Piano Chord Cm7-5 Cm7-5 Piano Chord F7 F7 Piano Chord Bb7-5 Bb7-5 Piano Chord One small variation you can try is on the second line of chords. Instead of staying on Ebm6 then going to Bm7, you could try this :Ebm6 Ebm6 Piano Chord Ab7 Ab7 Piano Chord Bm7 Bm7 Piano Chord E7 E7 Piano Chord Bbm7 Bbm7 Piano Chord Eb7 Eb7 Piano Chord The rest of the song repeats these chord changes - but breaks them up a bit and varies them as the solos go over the top. Chord Shapes : -------------- These are just suggested shapes - you could try others. Note - I've included two alternatives for these chords : Bm7, Bbm7, E7, Eb7 EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE 5x554x x5453x 3x332x x3231x 1x110x 6x676xAm7-5 Am7-5 Piano Chord D7 D7 Piano Chord Gm7-5 Gm7-5 Piano Chord C7 C7 Piano Chord Fm7-5 Fm7-5 Piano Chord Bb7 Bb7 Piano Chord E E Piano Chord A A Piano Chord D D Piano Chord G G Piano Chord B B Piano Chord E E Piano Chord E E Piano Chord A A Piano Chord D D Piano Chord G G Piano Chord B B Piano Chord E E Piano Chord E E Piano Chord A A Piano Chord D D Piano Chord G G Piano Chord B B Piano Chord E E Piano Chord E E Piano Chord A A Piano Chord D D Piano Chord G G Piano Chord B B Piano Chord E E Piano Chord E E Piano Chord A A Piano Chord D D Piano Chord G G Piano Chord B B Piano Chord E E Piano Chord 11 9 8 x x x 10 9 8 x x x 998xxx 8x78xx 464444Ebm Ebm Piano Chord Ebm/D Ebm/Db Cm6 Cm6 Piano Chord Abm7 Abm7 Piano Chord EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE x4342x x6x576 757xxx 056xxx 646xxx x6564xDb7 Db7 Piano Chord Ebm6 Ebm6 Piano Chord Bm7 Bm7 Piano Chord E7 E7 Piano Chord Bbm7 Bbm7 Piano Chord Eb7 Eb7 Piano Chord EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE x43444 x68876 4x453x 8x887x x8786x 6x675xDb9 Db9 Piano Chord Ebm* Ebm* Piano Chord Ab7-5 Ab7-5 Piano Chord Cm7-5 Cm7-5 Piano Chord F7 F7 Piano Chord Bb7-5 Bb7-5 Piano Chord EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE EADGBE 2x332x 4x454x 797777 076750 686666 x6564xGbmaj7 Gbmaj7 Piano Chord Ab7 Ab7 Piano Chord Bm7 Bm7 Piano Chord E7 E7 Piano Chord Bbm7 Bbm7 Piano Chord Eb7 Eb7 Piano Chord
